Description
In 1902, Emil Ebmeter created a unique alcoholic drink in Appenzell, the original recipe for which is still strictly family-owned and preserved unchanged to this day. This recipe is based on a carefully selected blend of 42 herbs and spices, which are at the heart of Appenzeller Alpenbitter.
The herbs for the Alpenbitter are kept in a special chamber, which is considered to be the most important in the whole of Appenzell. Access to this herb chamber is reserved for a select few who know the secret of its exact composition. Alpenbitter is made exclusively from natural raw materials and contains no chemical additives.
A recently initiated pilot project now also allows local farming families to participate in the cultivation of the herbs, which further strengthens the product’s regional ties and sustainability.
