In 1997, having elevated the Chianti estate to the pinnacle of success, Querciabella set eyes on the southern Tuscan coast as the next fertile ground to put down roots, literally. At the time, Maremma was untamed, still steeped in wilderness. Here, Querciabella chose the perfect white canvas, a seaside estate just south of Grosseto, to plant new vineyards, biodynamic since inception.
Mongrana – first vintage 2005 – is the result of much experimentation and freedom of blending. Its good-tempered nature instantly rewards those seeking complexity and depth of flavours without renouncing remarkable freshness. In the words of world-famous critic Antonio Galloni: “There is so much to like here!”
The wine’s rise to “Top 100 Wines of the World” (Wine Spectator, 2013) has been quite the journey! Bruce Sanderson picked it again in 2019 and 2020 for the magazine’s “Top 100 Value Wines” as well as one of “8 Italian Reds at 90+ points”; from James Suckling’s “Review of Italian Wines” to The Drinks Business list for the Best Unoaked Tuscan Red, it’s no secret that Mongrana offers an excellent deal.
Harmony and simplicity are beautifully built around a supple core of fruit. We harvest each grape variety at the peak of phenolic maturation. Following gentle fermentation management, the base wines undergo élevage in cement vats for at least ten months before the final blend becomes Mongrana.
No animal products or byproducts are used in the production of this wine, making it suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
